‘Volgarr the Viking II’ arrives this August on PC and consoles.
DIGITAL ECLIPSE
Digital Eclipse has made its name by carefully curating and transforming classic games. Now, it’s shifting its attention to another retro-inspired cult hit–one that will kill you repeatedly.
The company, which was instrumental in the bar-setting Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration–plus The Making of Karateka, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, and anniversary collections for SNK, Disney, Mega Man, and Street Fighter–is assisting on the follow-up to the wildly popular and wilfully punishing Volgarr the Viking, the 2013 ode to brutal 2D side-scrolling classics like Castlevania, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, and Rastan.
Volgarr the Viking II was unveiled at today’s Guerrilla Collective 2024 with its debut trailer, and the game will arrive on PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Series X|S on August 6.
The original Volgarr the Viking, released by Crazy Viking Studios in 2013, started through a successful Kickstarter campaign and sold over one million copies on PC and consoles. You played the role of warrior Volgarr, armed with a sword, spear, and basic shield, under the command of Odin to kill a dragon. You had to jump, slide, dodge, and duck incoming threats, learn enemy patterns, and upgrade yourself to take on ever-increasing threats.
Volgarr the Viking II enhances this simple but intense experience while maintaining the ethos of its predecessor. Both Digital Eclipse and Crazy Viking Studios tout bigger Norse-inspired worlds, more enemy encounters, a “roster of ruthless bosses”, a greater focus on precision and move-set mastery, and more challenging level layouts, underpinned with an orchestral soundtrack.
